Chiming Mantel Clocks
In the early 18th century, chiming mechanisms were integrated into beautifully carved clocks, increasing their demand and improving upon their design in general. When the first chiming mechanisms were built into traditional clock cabinets, many of the earlier models were quite similar to many famous church and cathedral bell towers—just much smaller in size! The entire goal in the design and architect of these quaint chiming mantle clocks was to enchant the owner with sound. Some of these earlier models had 7 chiming bells and up to 12. Some even played a different melody for every day of the week, which was a major feature clock enthusiasts of the period adored. Many are still styled to have this type of ability today as well.
Now, because the bells were considered a bit cumbersome, clock designers decided to try and create chimes with different materials, to decrease size and improve sound quality. They came up with long tubular bells that were hollowed out. These were integrated into the very back of the clock cabinet. It was the early 19th century when these changes began to really take hold and transfer the sound and inner working of the handsome clocks.
Because the bells were made of copper and long, but slender—they fit better and they made a strikingly different sound too. On every half hour, these provide a variation of sound, perhaps half a melody—but on every hour they play the full tune chosen. The sitting of the chiming mantel clocks will also have an impact on their sound—even today. If the clock is placed on a hard surface or a tiled floor the sound is magnified. When on a soft surface the chiming is not as distinguishable. How these mantel clocks are placed is a personal choice, but for the most part, they find a nice spot amidst other ornamentals on a mantle place!
